Seeing Clearly in Your Senior Years

As we age, caring for our eyes helps us stay independent, safe, and connected to the world around us.

Good vision supports everyday activities, reduces fall risk, and helps ensure safe driving. Even if you don’t wear glasses, regular eye exams are important – many conditions like glaucoma progress quietly, and exams can also reveal early signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health concerns.

Because provincial coverage for routine eye exams varies across Canada, asrTrust supports members with coverage for routine eye exams to encourage proactive, preventative eye care.

1. Eye Exam Coverage

How Coverage Works

  • If your province covers routine eye exams, use your provincial plan.
  • If your province does NOT cover routine eye exams, asrTrust covers your exam (up to $140 every 24 months).

Coverage by Age

Under Age 20Most provinces fund routine eye exams for children and youth. If the province does not cover an eye exam for someone under 20, asrTrust pays for the exam.
Age 20–64asrTrust covers one routine eye exam every 24 months, up to $140, regardless of province. This applies even if your province offers no exam coverage for this age group.
Age 65+Routine exam coverage for seniors varies significantly across Canada.

If your province covers routine senior exams:
– Use your provincial plan.

If your province does NOT cover routine senior exams:
asrTrust covers the exam every 24 months, up to $140, ensuring seniors continue to receive essential eye care.

2. Provincial Coverage (65+)

Provinces that provide routine senior eye exam coverage:

  • Ontario – every 18 months
  • Quebec – every 12 months

Provinces/territories that do not provide senior coverage:

asrTrust covers the exam up to $140 every 24 months in:

  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland & Labrador
  • Nova Scotia
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Saskatchewan
  • Nunavut

All other provinces:

  • Senior eye exams may be covered, but frequency varies. Check with your eye care provider.

3. Choosing a Vision Provider

You may receive eye exams from licensed:

  • Optometrists
  • Ophthalmologists

Tip: Prices vary—request a quote before booking.

4. Making the Most of Your Benefits

  • Your eye exam coverage resets 24 months after your first eye exam claim. If you reach the maximum before then, coverage becomes available again once the full 24 months have passed. You may want to schedule your next eye exam around the same time your prescription lenses/frames benefit resets to make the most of both benefits.
