Aging at Home: A Two-Part Series on Maintaining Health and Safety

As we age, many of us prefer the comfort and familiarity of our own homes. Aging at home allows you to maintain independence and stay connected to your community, but it also requires thoughtful planning to ensure safety, access to proper care, and a comfortable living environment.

In this two-part series, we’ll explore key aspects of aging at home:

  • Part 1: In-home care options available through Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and nursing care, and how these services help you maintain your health and independence.
  • Part 2: Coming in February, we’ll discuss key steps to prepare your home for aging in place, including safety modifications and essential equipment to enhance your security and independence.

By addressing both in-home care and home modifications, this series will help you create a comprehensive plan for aging at home with confidence and comfort.

In-Home Care: Personal Support Workers (PSWs)

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) are trained to assist with a variety of tasks, ensuring you can continue to live independently while staying safe and healthy at home. Your asrTrust plan covers PSW services for:

  • Assistance with Daily Activities: PSWs help with activities like bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting, ensuring you maintain your dignity and comfort.
  • Mobility Support: They assist with transferring between beds, chairs, and walking, while also ensuring your home is free of fall hazards.

In-Home Care: Nursing Support

For those who need more specialized care, nursing support at home is available with your asrTrust plan. Registered Nurses (RNs) or Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) can visit you at home to manage health conditions, administer medications, and offer skilled care. Key services include:

  • Chronic Disease Management: Nurses can help manage conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis and offer guidance on care.
  • Wound Care: Nurses assist with dressing changes for surgical wounds or chronic ulcers, ensuring proper healing and preventing infection.
  • Medication Management: Nurses help organize and administer medications to ensure you follow your prescribed treatment plan.
  • Post-Surgery Care: After surgery, nurses help monitor recovery, provide rehabilitation guidance, and detect any potential complications.

The Seamless Integration of PSWs and Nursing Support

PSWs and nurses collaborate to deliver holistic in-home care that covers both daily activities and medical needs. PSWs assist with tasks like bathing and dressing, while nurses manage health conditions, monitor vital signs, and provide specialized medical care.

Together, PSWs and nurses create a well-rounded support system, making aging at home more comfortable and manageable.
