Why Foot Care Matters for Seniors
Even small issues, like long nails or sore heels, can make walking hard, reduce balance, and increase the risk of falls.
If you have diabetes, foot care is even more important. A chiropodist or podiatrist can help prevent infections and other problems that may lead to bigger health concerns.
Taking care of your feet helps you stay active, comfortable, and independent.
What Is a Chiropodist or Podiatrist?
A foot-care expert may be called a chiropodist (in Ontario) or a podiatrist (in all other provinces and territories). Both are regulated professionals who can help with:
- Foot or heel pain
- Thick or hard-to-trim toenails
- Corns or calluses
- Ingrown nails
- Fungal infections
- Foot problems caused by diabetes
Note:
- In Ontario, most foot-care providers are called chiropodists,
- In all other provinces and territories, the standard title is podiatrist
- Both offer safe, professional care.
Your Plan Helps Pay for Foot Care
Your asrTrust retiree plan covers visits to a licensed foot-care provider up to your $750 annual combined paramedical coverage.
To be covered, the provider must be licensed in their province or a member of a professional association recognized by GreenShield. Coverage applies to amounts not paid by your provincial health plan.
Note: Surgeries by a chiropodist or podiatrist are not covered, as these fall under your provincial health plan.
